My style is meditative, immediate and non-figurative. I like listening in for the natural movement of the moment, and as the layers build, discovering what emerges from nothing. My practice evolves out of a playful and curious exploration, whilst staying present and open to what is challenging. Largely it is a study of composition (colour and form), material textures and energetic movement. My intention is to let the body lead as a meditation, and to observe what parts of the psyche try to obscure that natural movement, and to gently release them.
I’m currently exploring using earth pigment oils, watercolour, plant inks, plus various mixed media, to paint and collage onto paper and canvas. I’m especially enjoying the land connection and material experimentation that the earth pigment collection and processing brings. Nearby bays expose characterful and vibrant, unearthed strata, full of colour and temporal awe. Collecting pigment in built up areas such as crumbling brick from an old town building is also included, and provides a creative way to document journeys and connection to place. I have a strong sketchbook practice, and this daily documentation and way of connecting, is increasingly dear to me.
